If you are a recent high school graduate looking at potential colleges to apply to next fall, don’t be fooled by supposedly “accredited schools”. Schools do not receive accreditation from CAAHEP (or recognition from ARRT), only specific programs do. Some schools may have a few programs accredited while others may have all their health education programs accredited – it depends if a particular program passes the CAAHEP’s rigorous accreditation process. |

While the number of ultrasound schools in NY in 2016 will vary as the year goes on, hopefully this list will be of help to you.
Why study cardiac sonography?
Cardiac sonography is one of the many sonography specialization tracks a student can take. The CAAHEP only recognizes four major specialties: general, cardiac, vascular, and pediatric (all other specialties typically fall under general sonography). Cardiac sonography, as the name implies, focuses on sonography on the heart --- in layman’s term, a heart ultrasound. The high frequency sound waves produced in sonography do not harm heart tissue and instead allow images to be created of the moving heart. In fact, a Doppler ultrasound of the heart allows real-time imaging as the heart pumps blood to the rest of the body!
ARDMS certification
The ARDMS is a must-have for any sonographer. The United States does not require sonographers to be licensed in order to practice but different sonography governing bodies do encourage sonographers to take the ARDMS exam in order to receive certification. Hospitals and other institutions typically require a sonographer to be certified before he or she can be hired.
Different colleges all over the US promise to provide the best possible training, but it is up to you, the student, to be discerning of these promises. The best education is still offered by accredited programs, although the ARDMS does not require you to graduate from one if you want to take the certification exam. Other jobs similar to ultrasound tech also have their respective CAAHEP accredited programs in various schools throughout the country.
A sonographer’s salary
What you earn as a sonographer will vary depending on where you work, geographically and institutionally. The highest paying state in the US is California, where sonographers earn an annual average salary of $95,880. They also happen to be the state with the highest employment level for sonographers --- 5,060 to be exact. The highest paying industry for sonographers are outpatient care centers, where the average annual salary is $83,600.
