There are over 200 accredited schools as of 2013 that offer a variety of diagnostic medical sonography (DMS) programs in the US. While educational opportunities for students are vast, problems with tuition and expenses are still big problems students face. Women who want to study are at an extreme disadvantage if their family does not have enough resources, since parents often choose to send the male members of the family to school instead. However, different organizations now offer sonography scholarships for women and men.
Sonography as a career choice
Diagnostic medical sonography is a career that men and women can take. Sonographers are all trained the same way in how to handle a sonogram machine. The sonogram sends high frequency waves through the body with a transducer. The waves bounce back from different internal organs and structures to create images on the sonogram. As a sonographer, people have to be good communicators as well because patient interaction is part of the job description.
Sonography scholarships
While most schools usually grant scholarships for different allied health programs, sonography organizations also offer a number of scholarships for students who want to take up a career in sonography. Scholarship grants typically don’t have gender bias when it comes to applicants. Men and women are on equal standing when it comes to applying for a grant.
