Sonography or more commonly known as ultrasound is a medical career that has gained notoriety as one of the fastest growing careers in the United States.
Compared to the predicted employment growth rate in the US of 11 percent in a span of 10 years, Diagnostic Medical Sonography is expected to increase by 46 percent during the same amount of time. That is more than four times faster than the nationwide average.
Because of these amazing predictions for sonographers, a career as a sonographer or even simply studying it has become very competitive. There are over 200 colleges/universities that are accredited by the CAAHEP, and admission to them can be very difficult if you don’t know what requirements are typically asked from applicants. Most of the students build up their applications from the first year of high school to make the best possible impression.

Choosing the degree and school
New high school graduates often make the mistake of applying to so many colleges without considering what kind of education they want to receive. There are schools that are considered the best because the students they produce often end up at the top of their fields. However, it is all up to the students to choose what school will give them the best training and an educational experience they can get a lot out of.
Remember, it should never be about applying to everything and hoping you get accepted, but choosing for yourself what school will help you get you where you want to be. There are many sonography certification programs (and association and bachelor degree programs) in the US – you can find the best fit for you with proper research.

- Completion of general courses – While other schools include general courses such as College English and Algebra (typical for bachelor degree programs) during the first year of school, others will require students to complete them all before applying for the DMS program. It can take anywhere between six months and a year to complete and pass these classes.
- Good high school and college GPA – A good track record in high school and during your first year of college (for general courses) is a must when applying to a sonography program. A high GPA shows that you are well-rounded, and are most likely to complete the program with flying colors.
- Relevant experience – This requirement is common for working students who have some form of experience in health care or specifically with sonography. Even as a high school graduate, if you have part-timed at a diagnostic center or a hospital, you can also include that in your application.
