New York is one of the most popular places to become employed as a sonographer. It boasts high levels of employment for sonographers, with high salaries to match. Becoming a sonographer in this state is quite easy – starting with enrolling in one of the ultrasound technician programs in NY. Currently there are over 200 accredited programs in the country, ten of them being in NY as of 2014.
Enrolling in the DMS program
The educational pathway to becoming a sonographer starts with the diagnostic medical sonography program or the DMS program. The DMS program can be completed in three different ways: certificate, associate, and baccalaureate degrees. These vary in length of completion between 12 months to 4 years. Certificate programs are typically completed in 1 year, associate programs in 2 years, and bachelor programs in 4 years – or the equivalent of 8 semesters.
There are two parts to the DMS program: (1) lecture and laboratory skills training and (2) clinical experience. The first part is completed in the school and the second part in affiliated health care centers such as diagnostic laboratories and hospitals.
